Safety and Side Effects

Before taking BENICAR or BENICAR HCT, tell your doctor if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. It is important to tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, both prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, liver problems, or if you have lupus. Please read the important safety information below.

Some people taking BENICAR or BENICAR HCT may have side effects:

  • The most common side effect of BENICAR and BENICAR HCT is dizziness
  • Other side effects of BENICAR HCT include upper respiratory tract infections, too much uric acid in the blood, and nausea
  • Side effects of both BENICAR and BENICAR HCT are generally mild
  • In studies of both medicines, side effects happened in people taking BENICAR or BENICAR HCT about as often as they did in people taking a placebo, or sugar pill
  • In studies of BENICAR, the number of people reporting a cough was similar in the groups either taking medicine or taking a placebo

Be sure to talk with your doctor about any side effects you may have from BENICAR or BENICAR HCT. Your doctor may have ways to help. Also, do not cut back or stop taking BENICAR or BENICAR HCT without first talking with your doctor.
