How Benicar/Benicar HCT Work

Benicar is in a class of drugs used to treat high blood pressure called angiotensin receptor blockers, or ARBs. Angiotensin II is a natural substance that increases blood pressure in the body. Benicar works by blocking angiotensin II receptors in the blood vessels (arteries and veins). Benicar HCT is one tablet that consists of two different classes of drugs to treat high blood pressure. One component is Benicar. The other component is in a class called thiazide diuretics, specifically hydrochlorothiazide, also known as HCTZ, and works by increasing water excretion from the body. The two classes of drugs have a complementary effect in reducing blood pressure.
