Working With Your Doctor
Since you will have to manage your blood pressure for the rest of your life, you'll want to develop a close relationship with your doctor.
Partner with your doctor
Doctors are busy people. They have a lot of patients to see, and not much time to see them.
You can help by:
- Give your doctor a list of all the drugs you take, including over-the-counter drugs, herbs, vitamins, and supplements. They may affect your blood pressure. They also can change how well your blood pressure medicine works.
- Call your doctor if you forget to take your medicine to find out what to do. If you miss a dose, do not double the dose the next time you take your medicine.
- Test your blood pressure at home between checkups. Keep your feet on the floor, your arm on a support at the level of your heart, and your back leaning against some surface. Relax for 5 minutes before checking your blood pressure. Keep a list of the results to share with the doctor or nurse.
