JNC 7 Treatment Guidelines
The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7), published in 2003, sets the target BP for all patients with hypertension at <140/90 mm Hg (or 130/80 mm Hg in patients with hypertension and diabetes or chronic kidney disease).1 To help achieve this target, lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic treatment have been found to be effective. Many patients will require a combination of more than one antihypertensive medication in order to reach their BP goal.

Classification of blood pressure
JNC 7 classifies blood pressure in adults as follows (in mm Hg):1
| Blood pressure classification | SBP (mm Hg) | DBP (mm Hg) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | <120 | and <80 |
| Prehypertension | 120—139 | or 80—89 |
| Stage 1 | 140—159 | or 90—99 |
| Stage 2 | >160 | or >100 |
Patients with prehypertension are considered to be at increased risk for progression to hypertension, and those in the 120—139/80—89 mm Hg BP range are considered to be at twice the risk of developing hypertension as those with lower values.1,2 In general, patients with prehypertension should be treated with lifestyle changes.
